Our photography workshops are open to photographers and cinematographers of all skill levels. We host just a handful of workshops each year in order to stay focused on the quality of the experience and education that we provide. When you attend one of our workshops you'll have our instructor's undivided attention the entire time, helping you learn advanced techniques from a combination of classroom sessions and on-location shoots.
Much of our year is spent planning our trips, fine-tuning our classroom sessions, and keeping up to date with new software and techniques in order to make sure you have the most incredible learning experience imaginable.

What to Bring:
DSLR / Mirrorless Camera, Wide (between 14mm - 24mm) lens, motion control gear (optional), sturdy tripod(s), charged batteries, 32GB memrory cards or larger, external intervalometer, Camera Bag / Backpack, flashlight / headlamp with optional RED lamp.
What to Wear:
Night time temperatures average 44 degrees this time of year. Please bring gloves, warm coat, hand warmers, hat, comfortable hiking shoes.
About
Grab your motion control head and/or slider and join us on this field workshop where you'll learn to capture breathtaking motion control time lapses of the night sky in one of the best locations for astro-lapse and motion control.
Photographers without motion control gear are also welcome to attend as this is a fantastic location even for static time lapse.
Goblin Valley is an ideal location to use motion control gear - thanks to its unique foregrounds and mid layer elements that add depth and parallax to your time lapses.
You'll find amazing compositions thanks to the 3600 acres of goblin-shaped hoodoos, each one helping to make this location look and feel like another planet.
Goblin Valley State Park is a Gold-Tier quality dark sky park and offers unique compositions in every direction.

For those that aren't comfortable driving at night or don't wish to carpool we have a 12-passenger van so that you can sleep on the way back.
What to Expect
I have been photographing Moab for over 20 years, and leading night sky workshops here since 2013. I have extensive knowledge of the area, and continue discovering and adding to this knowledge with each passing year.
Unlike static photography where you can visit multiple locations in an evening, time lapse photography locks us to one location per evening, which is why I have chosen Dead Horse Point and Goblin Valley. These two locations offer so many compositions they easily take the place of multiple locations. Bring a couple of cameras and you wont be disappointed.
As an instructor I am here for you - not the other way around. I'll be there to instruct and assist you with any questions you have during and after setup whether it's finding a great composition; getting critical focus at night; choosing a proper interval and focal length; understanding hyper focal distance, or any other question that you or others will have.
During this workshop you'll also learn how to effectively light your foregrounds and each participant will also receive their own light to use and to keep,
We will carpool to Goblin Valley in as few as cars as possible.
Volunteer drivers must be have a valid U.S. drivers license.
Ron Risman: Films and Photography
Ron Risman has been a photographer for over 30 years, and cinematographer and time-lapse specialist since 2008. As a photographer and timelapse specialist Ron quickly fell in love with night photography, and finding new and creative ways to capture the night sky. Ron has been commissioned to shoot time-lapses for corporations such as Land Rover, Liberty Mutual, Restoration Hardware, and IttQ Japan; news organizations such as FOX CT News and WFTV-9 Orlando; and his work has appeared in films such as the HBO's "The Crash Reel" which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in the Land Rover short "Bridges to the Stars." and in a film about Utah's Might Five National Parks.
Ron is a commercial permit holder for the national and state parks where he leads workshops, and is certified in CPR / First Aid, and meets or exceeds all insurance requirements.
