What to Bring:

DSLR / Mirrorless Camera, Wide (between 14mm - 24mm) lens, sturdy tripod, charged batteries, 32GB memrory cards or larger, external intervalometer, Camera Bag / Backpack, flashlight / headlamp with optional RED lamp.

What to Wear:

Night time temperatures average 44 degrees this time of year. Please bring gloves, warm coat, hand warmers, hat, comfortable hiking shoes.

Join us on this field workshop where you'll learn to use your DSLR or Mirrorless camera, intervalometer, and lighting to capture the night sky in motion.

Dead Horse Point State Park is home to an abundance of Juniper and Pinion trees that are ideal foregrounds to the night sky, and rising Milky Way. Dead Horse Point is also a Gold-Tier Dark Sky Park that sits 2000 feet above a goose neck in the Colorado River and offers breathtaking views of the Colorado river by day and our Milky Way galaxy by night.

You'll learn the techniques I use to find composition and obtain critical sharpness quickly and effectively even in total darkness.

You'll learn to effectively light your foreground subjects to match the sky exposure, and will receive one of the same lights I use on location - to shoot with and to take home.

You'll learn the proper way to setup your intervalometer and how to choose the best interval and exposure time for the focal length you've chosen.

For those that aren't comfortable driving at night or don't wish to carpool we have a 12-passenger van so that you can sleep on the way back.

What to Expect

I have been photographing Moab for over 20 years, and leading night sky workshops here since 2013. I have extensive knowledge of the area, and continue discovering and adding to this knowledge with each passing year.

Unlike static photography where you can visit multiple locations in an evening, time lapse photography locks us to one location per evening, which is why I have chosen Dead Horse Point and Goblin Valley. These two locations offer so many compositions they easily take the place of multiple locations. Bring a couple of cameras and you wont be disappointed.

As an instructor I am here for you - not the other way around. I'll be there to instruct and assist you with any questions you have during and after setup whether it's finding a great composition; getting critical focus at night; choosing a proper interval and focal length; understanding hyper focal distance, or any other question that you or others will have.

We will carpool to Goblin Valley in as few as cars as possible. Volunteer drivers must be have a valid U.S. drivers license.

Ron Risman: Films and Photography

Ron Risman has been a photographer for over 30 years, and cinematographer and time-lapse specialist since 2008. As a photographer and timelapse specialist Ron quickly fell in love with night photography, and finding new and creative ways to capture the night sky. Ron has been commissioned to shoot time-lapses for corporations such as Land Rover, Liberty Mutual, Restoration Hardware, and IttQ Japan; news organizations such as FOX CT News and WFTV-9 Orlando; and his work has appeared in films such as the HBO's "The Crash Reel" which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in the Land Rover short "Bridges to the Stars." and in a film about Utah's Might Five National Parks.

Ron is a commercial permit holder for the national and state parks where he leads workshops and is certified in CPR / First Aid, and meets or exceeds all insurance requirements.
